Carer Awareness & Information
Events & Resources
At Universal Services for Carers in Derby, we know how important it is for unpaid carers to feel informed, confident, and equipped with essential skills. That’s why we offer a range of free Awareness and Information sessions—designed to help carers provide safe, effective care while boosting their own sense of empowerment and preparedness. These sessions also offer opportunities to share experiences and build knowledge alongside fellow carers.
Key areas are:
-
‘Just In Case’ Planning – Guidance for preparing your own measures for future care arrangements in case of emergencies and identifying your support network.
-
First Aid Training – Learn vital life-saving skills such as CPR, choking response and managing unconsciousness. These are designed to give you the confidence to act calmly and effectively in emergencies.
-
Online Carer Rights Awareness – Understand your entitlements and rights to ensure both you and the person you care for access the support needed.
-
Silvertime Legal: Wills & Power of Attorney – Specialist online and in person sessions offering clear, practical advice to help you plan ahead and protect the interests of those you care for.
-
Requestable Resources – If attending in person isn’t possible, carers can call our helpline to request free First Aid booklets, or manual handling resource sheets—clear, practical guides to help with safe supporting tasks like assisting with moving and handling.
In addition to in-person and online sessions, carers can explore our online Resource Library—a growing collection of videos, guides and downloadable tools covering a wide range of caring topics. We also run Monthly Carers Information Series, spotlighting key themes such as financial support and specialist care advice. These are a great way to stay up to date and connect with expert speakers. Recordings of these sessions are also available on our Resource Library page.
Keep an eye on our bi-monthly newsletter and online events calendar for dates of forthcoming sessions.
First Aid Training – What is First Aid?
First aid is the medical term used to describe the immediate assistance given to a person suffering a minor or major injury or sudden illness.
There are five main aims of first aid:
- Preserve life;
- Prevent an illness or injury from worsening;
- Promote recovery;
- Pain relief;
- Protecting the unconscious.
These can be remembered as the ‘5 Ps.’
It can include anything from performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to applying a plaster to a cut or fashioned a sling to support an injured arm. First aid is conducted either to solve a minor injury or illness (so cleaning a cut and putting on a plaster) to keeping a person safe and alive whilst an ambulance is being called.
