Carer Awareness & Information

Events & Resources

At Universal Services for Carers in Derby, we know how important it is for unpaid carers to feel informed, confident, and equipped with essential skills. That’s why we offer a range of free Awareness and Information sessions—designed to help carers provide safe, effective care while boosting their own sense of empowerment and preparedness. These sessions also offer opportunities to share experiences and build knowledge alongside fellow carers.

Key areas are:

  • ‘Just In Case’ Planning – Guidance for preparing your own measures for future care arrangements in case of emergencies and identifying your support network.
  • First Aid Training – Learn vital life-saving skills such as CPR, choking response and managing unconsciousness. These are designed to give you the confidence to act calmly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Online Carer Rights Awareness – Understand your entitlements and rights to ensure both you and the person you care for access the support needed.
  • Silvertime Legal: Wills & Power of Attorney – Specialist online and in person sessions offering clear, practical advice to help you plan ahead and protect the interests of those you care for.
  • Requestable Resources – Carers can call our helpline to request Moving & Assisting resource sheets with Falls Prevention Information—clear, practical guides to help with safe supporting tasks like assisting with moving and handling.
In addition to in-person and online sessions, carers can explore our online Resource Library—a growing collection of videos, guides and downloadable tools covering a wide range of caring topics. We also run Monthly Carers Information Series, spotlighting key themes such as financial support and specialist care advice. These are a great way to stay up to date and connect with expert speakers. Recordings of these sessions are also available on our Resource Library page.

Keep an eye on our bi-monthly newsletter and online events calendar for dates of forthcoming sessions.

How completing a ‘Just In Case’ Plan can help

‘Just In Case’ Planning – Your Guide to Preparing for Future Care

Being prepared matters. A ‘Just In Case’ plan helps you outline clearly what should happen if there’s an unexpected change in circumstances—for you or the person you care for.

Your plan should include:

  • Who will step in to provide support
  • Your preferred care arrangements
  • Key medical or personal information
  • Legal or financial wishes
  • Where to locate important documents

It’s also important to maintain an updated support network of family, friends, neighbours, or local services who understand your situation and wishes.

Regularly review and update your plan so it reflects any changes in your health, caring role, or contact details. Having a plan in place provides peace of mind for you, and certainty for those supporting you, ensuring roles, wishes, and arrangements are clear.
